Walk Alongside the Scenic Blue River in Overland Park

Trail Blue River Streamway Trail
Overview The Blue River forms at the nearby confluence of Coffee Creek and Wolf Creek. At this point on its journey, the river is wild, scenic and mostly unspoiled. This paved streamway trail makes it highly accessible. Beyond that, the walkway is sandwiched between the forested river and a vast shallow lake and wetland area. It’s prime habitat to view ducks, geese, birds of prey, amphibians and deer. A walkway leads across the center of the wetlands into an adjacent neighborhood.
Length This is a 2.7-mile out-and-back trail (1.35 miles each way). You can vary your walk by returning to the starting trailhead on neighborhood streets. There are also offramps that lead to side trails through the adjacent neighborhood.
Address and location
There is no designated parking lot for this trail, but there is plentiful street parking in the adjacent neighborhood (please be respectful of property owners and driveways).The southern trailhead is at 5498 W. 167th St., Stilwell, KS 66085 (167th St. and Nall Ave.).
The northern trailhead is next to Blue River Elementary School, 5039 W. 163rd Terrace, Overland Park, KS 66085. Parking at the school may be an option when classes are not in session.
Conditions This is a paved, easy walk with minimal elevation changes.
Kid friendly? This trail is paved and level, suitable for strollers. Since it borders a lake and river, parents should be mindful of water safety.
Restrooms are not available on the trail.
How busy? This is a generally quiet trail, but popular with locals.
Pets Yes, on a leash (unless otherwise designated).
Bikes Non-motorized bicycles are permitted.
