Topeka’s Ward-Meade Site: An unexpected blend of nature and history
Ward-Meade Historic Site and Botanical Garden, Topeka, Kansas
A renowned botanical garden sits adjacent to a re-created 1800s community.
Ward-Meade Historic Site and Garden is not a trail, but a park full of delight for gardeners, history buffs and those who enjoy the outdoors. This 6-acre site has two distinct components:
A botanical garden that features diverse flora and architecture
Old Prairie Town: A re-created historic community featuring buildings transported from throughout Kansas.
The Ward-Meade Botanical Garden features a National Daylily Display Garden, a Hosta Display Garden and an annual Tulips at Twilight event each April. Beyond the flora, the garden includes a footbridge, gazebo, fountains, benches and unique architecture. More than 500 varieties of plant life are featured and identified.
Old Prairie Town, an 1880s replica, is located on the former Oregon Trail and features an active, old-fashioned drug store and soda fountain, a general store, church, school, depot and more.
