Lake Jacomo: Where the buffalo still roam

Jackson County Native Hooved Animal Enclosure at Lake Jacomo

Local conservation efforts, including Jackson County’s Native Hooved Animal Enclosure, are keeping bison alive and well.

Elk and bison used to freely roam the entire Kansas City area. Due to conservation efforts, they are slowly returning. Part of that effort is the Native Hooved Animal Enclosure at Lake Jacomo. The two species roam this 110-acre fenced area and often congregate near spectators. These are still wild animals, so exercise caution near the fence. Although the animals reside at this location, they aren’t always visible because they wander widely across the large enclosure. Sometimes if you return in an hour, they’ve migrated back toward Park Road for your camera and viewing pleasure.

Visitors can park directly in front of the enclosure in one of two parking areas off East Park Road. Not to spoil the fun, but please note that it’s unwise (and unsafe) to put your hands through fence in the presence of the animals. Feeding, though fun and previously encouraged, is now forbidden due to USDA regulations. With those few exceptions, this elk and bison refuge is an opportunity to observe native Missouri wildlife. Enjoy!
