Get a four-state view at this remote Kansas bluff

An epic vista in Kansas? Why yes!

White Cloud, Kansas, affords a four-state view over the Missouri River Valley.

The view from White Cloud’s Four State Lookout.

Kansas is not (often) known as a place of sweeping vistas. There are notable exceptions, including the Flint Hills, Chautauqua Hills and rugged terrain in the west. But there’s a vista not too far from Kansas City. White Cloud, Kansas, is a village in the state’s extreme northeast corner. It’s a scenic but remote area, nestled below bluffs that rise high above the Missouri River Valley. Nebraska, Missouri (and of course Kansas) are always visible. But on a clear day, Iowa can also be seen.

Historic White Cloud is on the verge of becoming a ghost town, so don’t count on shopping the town square. The Four State Lookout is a short drive into the town, but the road is unimproved. Unless you have a 4x4, you’ll need to drive slowly and use caution or risk damaging your vehicle. Or you can park and walk to the top. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth it.

This viewpoint is not a hiking destination in and of itself (unless you choose to walk the hill instead of driving up). However, it is on the way to the spectacular Indian Cave State Park in Nebraska, which is 45 minutes north.
