Boot Hill is a reminder of Kansas’ Wild West past

Boot Hill Road, Paxico, Kansas Flint Hills

A lonely destination on a gravel road yields a glimpse of cattle drives, one-room schools and days gone by.

There are several Boot Hills, but the one best known locally is in Dodge City, Kansas. The idea of Boot Hill cemeteries implies they are populated by violent men who went down fighting – died with their boots on. Boot Hill Road doesn’t (as far as we know) contain any of that kind of drama. If you’re touring the Flint Hills (or even driving by on I-70), it’s a scenic detour. Between the highway and Boot Hill, you’ll pass a one-room school house, cemetery and … cows. Traditionally, fence posts along the hill are topped with cowboy boots. But we’ve also seen kids snow booties. Enjoy!
