Leaf the office behind! Savor fall colors on these KC hikes
As the leaves turn, make plans to explore these local expressions of nature.
We’ve posted about our favorite locales to enjoy fall colors here. But there’s much more to enjoy in Greater Kansas City. And of course there’s more than just one type of environment to enjoy the scenes of autumn. Options range from scattered trees on the prairie, thick forest or dynamic riverfront cottonwoods and sycamores. Looking for a place to start? We’re at your service.
Black Hoof Park is a place for all seasons, but is especially vibrant in fall.
Lenexa’s Black Hoof Park is a community favorite with both paved and natural surface trails looping Lake Lenexa through forested hills.
Experience autumn paradise at Prairie Center
A native prairie environment is occasionnally interrupted by groves of trees in this 300-acre preserve in Olathe, Kansas.
Augie Trail at Lake Jacomo
On the 13.5-mile Augie Trail, you’ll experience deep forest, rocky outcroppings, views of the lake from 100 feet above and quiet coves that rarely get visitors.
Runners Up
It’s nearly impossible to recommend just three trails for autumn adventures. Here are a few more we enjoy in the fall:
Bluffwoods Conservation Area, Buchanan County, Mo.
Trice-Dedman Memorial Woods, Lathrop, Mo.
Baker Wetlands, Lawrence, Kansas
Willkomm Trail, Perry, Kansas
