Rain kindles a rumbling waterfall at Lake Olathe

Waterfalls are fairly infrequent in the Kansas City area – especially any that are more than a foot or two high. That’s what’s unique about Lake Olathe Falls on Cedar Creek. It drops at least six feet.

This waterfall rumbles after an abundance of rain. It’s also one of the easier falls to reach in Kansas City. Parking is available on gravel lots across the street (unless construction disrupts things) and you can simply walk down a paved sidewalk to view the falls. They can be viewed from the creek level or the bridge above the falls. The creek’s delta is a delightful marsh area with cattails and is home to red-winged blackbirds and others, plus waterfowl.

The waterfall is also the trailhead to the Cedar Creek Trail, which heads south and connects with Cedar Lake. (As of this writing, this trailhead is closed for construction.)
