Blue River Glades Trail and Habitat Restoration

  • Eddy-Ballentine Trail 7762-8428 Blue River Road Kansas City, MO (map)

Team up with others to preserve a unique ecosystem.

Join the Sierra Club for trail and habitat maintenance at the Blue River Glades Natural Area. This limestone glade is rare for northern Missouri. It includes chinquapin oaks nearly 300 years old atop limestone. A prairie-like flora of grasses and wildflowers provides rich color and texture through most of the year. The glade is threatened by several invasive plant species, especially honeysuckle, which needs to be eradicated so native flowers and grasses flourish again in these wild areas. No prior experience necessary. Volunteers will work to remove invasive honeysuckle from the Eddy-Ballentine Trail loop which winds through upland forest to the Blue River Glade Natural Area.

Bring work gloves and wear long pants and sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes or boots (no sandals). Also bring glasses or sunglasses for eye protection and a full bottle of water bottle. In addition, bring hand saws or loppers if you have them.
